Chase Young traded to San Francisco 49ers for a 2024 third-round pick | NFL News, Rankings and Statistics

The Washington Commanders are trading former first-round edge defender Chase Young to the San Francisco 49ers, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday.

The Commanders will reportedly receive a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft in return, giving the team a first-round pick, two second-round picks and two third-round picks for 2024.

The Commanders had already dealt edge rusher Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears earlier in the day, which means it will be time for a new-look defensive line in Washington.

For the Niners, the move reunited Young and Nick Bosa, who were teammates at Ohio State. Bosa’s last full season with the Buckeyes came in 2017, Young’s freshman year. The 2018 season was supposed to be a takeover year for both of them on the same defensive line, but Bosa played only three games due to injury.

The Niners already had one of the most productive defensive lines in the league. As a team, they boast the NFL’s highest pass-rush grade at 90.1. They also have the second-most total pressures (173) and the highest collective pass-rush win percentage (64.6%).

After missing time in his first few years due to injury, Young is playing the best football of his professional career in 2023. His 79.7 pass-rush grade is a career-high, as is his 18.2% pass-rush win percentage.

It’s hard to believe a conditional third-round pick is all the Commanders could get for Young, who is on pace for a career year.

However, both he and Sweat were pending unrestricted free agents this offseason. It made sense for the team to move one of them on, but the decision to trade both comes as a bit of a surprise.
